Dark Step

Dark Step (formerly Black Leg) is a First Sea fighting style centered around leg based attacks, offering a fast and aggressive close-range playstyle. It is the cheapest purchasable fighting style and stands out by having four abilities instead of the usual three, giving players more combat options early on.

One of its defining mechanics is Overheat, a temporary state that boosts damage output and increases its offensive pressure. Combined with its low mastery requirements, Dark Step is very beginner friendly and serves as a strong early upgrade from Combat. It is especially useful for players who cannot yet afford Water Kung Fu or Electric.

In combat, Dark Step is often underrated. It offers decent combo potential and includes stun based tools that can help start or extend combos, making it viable for both early grinding and basic PvP. However, many of its attacks can be countered by Instinct, which reduces its effectiveness against experienced players.

A small visual detail is that activating Aura while using Dark Step applies the effect to the legs instead of the arms. This is purely cosmetic and provides no additional buffs.

Strengths & Weaknesses

A quick breakdown of where this build shines and struggles.

Strengths

  • Great early-game value - Very cheap and solid for First Sea farming.

  • Beginner-friendly - Low mastery requirements, so you unlock everything fast.

  • Good AoE coverage - All moves can hit multiple enemies, useful for grinding.

  • Decent combo utility - X and C can extend combos if they land.

  • Overheat buff helps damage - V gives a noticeable damage boost.

  • Good Aura grinding - Multi-hit moves stack Aura XP efficiently.

Weaknesses

  • Very weak M1s - Slowest click speed among fighting styles; poor sustained damage.

  • Bad scaling - Falls off hard once better fighting styles unlock.

  • Instinct hard-counters it - Main combo tools (X/C) are easy to dodge.

  • Poor with Buddha - Weak M1 + moves often fail in transformed mode.

  • PvP is rough - Slow startup, small hitboxes, and punishable endlag.

  • Long cooldown on V - Buff uptime is mediocre compared to cooldown.

Verdict

Dark Step is an excellent starter fighting style for cheap grinding, but terrible long term. Good only as an early game budget option or stepping stone toward stronger V2 fighting styles. In PvP, it’s mostly outclassed and unreliable.
